Short Summary/Description:

Sherlock, in my opinion, is an outstanding British detective! You probably all know the somewhat older British detectives like Frost, Agatha Christie, midsummer murders or Inspector Lewis. The nice thing about Sherlock is, is that it is a modern-day detective. I also need to add that I usually dislike detectives but that Sherlock has a different feel to it.

As Sherlock is a fairly new TV series I will discuss it entirely, without focussing on one episode. To this day there are only three episodes; each having the length of an entire film. None of the episodes are rushed and they all feel complete.

The series already starts with portraying Sherlock as a socially awkward being. They also give a little insight in what he does for a living. Then they switch to Watson. People familiar with the Sherlock books or films know that Watson is Sherlock’s partner and it is no different in this TV show. However, they have not met yet. This is an opportunity for the writers to create a funny, astonishing and typically Sherlock moment. It was a jaw-dropping experience for me the first time I saw it. It starts with Watson confiding to a friend that he is looking for a place to stay. This friend suggests that he meets Sherlock, a friend of his also looking for a room. The scene in where they meet is hard to describe as it is hard to describe Sherlock’s unusual nature. I think it is best to see for yourself, afraid I might ruin the magic.

Sherlock is time and time again asked to assist the London police with cases they are unable to solve. They only tolerate him because he is an utter genius in what he does. Sherlock’s mind works in mysterious ways and usually no one understands the things he is talking about. He gets very excited every time he hears another murder is committed and this emotion is followed by queer jumps and womanly utterances.

Comments:

You can probably already tell I am very enthusiastic about Sherlock; the reason being that it is “different” from other shows. I am aware of the fact that “different” is a very vague term and I will try to explain myself.

To start with: I really love the feel the show gives me. It successfully mixes an old-day feel with a contemporary feel. The colours are usually somewhat greyish and also Sherlock’s attire has an early twentieth century feel to it. However, Sherlock is addicted to texting. I think this is slightly different from all the other shows out there. They always have this office feel, unlike Sherlock, who dreads being in an office. I also feel that the writers and producers did an outstanding job creating Sherlock’s character. He is such a strong persona and all the traits are so distinctive and believable. I think the show is just so lively compared to the others. Then they created Watson; a man who is the polar opposite of Sherlock. The two of them balance very well.

So far there are absolutely no things I dislike about Sherlock. I simply adore Benedict Cumberbatch in his role as Sherlock. He portrays him so well. I have to say I have a thing for peculiar, socially awkward and slightly psychopathic characters. But it is not just his character that utterly fascinates me, but also his appearance. Cumberbatch’s features are so unusual and almost elf like. His icy-blue eyes are penetrating.

Recommendation:

I have only met one person who disliked it and it is still unclear to me why exactly he disliked it. I think that everyone can have different reasons for liking Sherlock. Be it the great dialogues and one-liners, the characters, London, (contemporary) detectives, humour, the sheer quality or just because one likes to enjoy Cumberbatch. The Quality and budget of the series is very high and so is the English they use. Especially Sherlock has a large vocabulary and I think this will definitely be beneficial to all learners of English.

I think you might just fall in love with Sherlock’s peculiar nature.
