Before I start. you have to know that Pan's Labyrinth is one of my alltime favourite films. The reason why the film 'only' has a 8.8 rating from IMDB is, what I believe, due to the fact that genre is questionably not for everyone. A vague description, I dare say, but it takes a certain person to profoundly love this film!
Plot:The film takes place in fascist Spain of 1944. I'm not going to bother you with historical facts as it is not at all of importance to understand the film. The main character, namely, is a young reserved girl named Ofelia (Ivana Baquero). She and her pregnant mother move in with the sadistic army officer Vidal (Sergio López) as Ofelia's mother is carrying Vidal's child. It becomes clear immediately that Vidal doesn't feel sympathetic towards Ofelia, or even that much towards her mother; he only cares for, what he thinks, is his unborn son.Ofelia really finds it hard to settle in, and is immediately swallowed by an eerie, but captivating, fantasy world. Eventhough she deeply cares for her mother, and she should help her in her struggling relationship with Vidal, Ofelia can't help herself but getting imensely involved in this (self-created??) fantasy world.
Then one day she meets an incredibly beautiful Faun, telling her do succeed in three tests to prove if she is indeed a princess or not. Now, I'll just shut up, or I'll be giving any spoilers :)
Why you would love/hate Pan's Labyrinth
I couldn't possibly comprehend why you would dislike Pan's Labyrinth (or El laberinto del Fauno in Spanish) The plot is perhaps not that special, but the execution is in one word: BRILLIANT. The creatures dwelling in this fantasy world are so beautifully made; making sure each detail is just right. If you feel like it you should do some research on the costumes on Youtube. The fact that the Faun actor could barely see and walk, and still performs perfectly, is mimd boggling to me. And, oh please, don't forget the child-eater. Many people shiver when hearing or reading this, but he's one of my favourite charaters of the film. And no, it's not just because he eats children :P He's just so eerily perfect, in the way he moves, acts and the whole setting he lives in.
Another thing that I find a real plus is that it's a Spanish film. usually I try to avoid American films and this films shows you exactly why. The mere passion portrayed in these films are so different from the bombastic American films. European films are so small and sensitive. Also, the Spanish language is beautiful and mysterious and it creates an overall ambiance throughout the film. Come on people! This is a MUST-SEE!
To end this is a hilarious way, this is a quote from a Christian website, which did a review on the film:
"Pan is a sicko sex-freak and people who adore, worship and base movies upon him are all in the same boat with Pan."
